Many Christians, even regular churchgoers, participants in
worship or church activity, who would say that Christianity is the central
thing that defines them, find themselves drowning in a vortex of business;
stuff; frustration; anger; depression; disappointment; fear; pride;
self-absorption; doubt; lust and addiction. Or, are swept up in work or family
or the problems of daily life. These are unavoidable. But, then, the same
wonder why their faith wanes, or motivation to serve is lost, or why these
things continue to dominate their life. I’m not saying this is the whole answer
or that any of those things will go away; but many of the same Christians do
not take even ten minutes on a daily basis to avail themselves to read the
scriptures, meditate, and pray. Setting aside just ten minutes each day to read
a psalm and ½ a chapter out of the gospels (or any biblical book), meditating
on that and adding a short prayer, will make a difference in your life. It
won’t solve your problems or make your pain go away. It won’t fix your broken
down car or get you one you don’t have. It won’t give you a job or make that
person – spouse, co-worker, boss, parent, child, friend, neighbor – who gets
under your skin, change … but it will give you a constant awareness of and connection
to God and Jesus Christ, a vision of another world and a different lens for
seeing this world, and remind you of a hope that stands over against what you
see in the darkness around you.
Just Do It.
